maybe the driver doesn't support xp. check to see if there's an updated driver for windows xp.

you may need to update your motherboard drivers. you may need the via 5 in one update or something. you may also need to update your computers BIOS. can you give us a model of the computer? can you give us a model of the sound card? when stuff is set so it 'should work' you want to see this:
1) no yellow bangs or question marks in Device Manager
2) a driver installed under Sound in Device Manager
3) speakers powered up and plugged into proper jack
4) test with Control Panel/Sounds/Play. when that works, test with music CD

humm those are devices that the drivers usually come on a CD that is supplied either with the mainboard you bought or as a recovery disk the computer maker sends with their computers. Depending upon what mfg made your computer or who you brought your mainboard from, you can insert the CD and it might autorun and provide you with a menue to install, chipset drivers, mainboard drivers, device drivers like onboard sound, onboard network card and onboard video.

Give us a little more info on what mfg made your computer and whether you have a recovery disk and/or mainboard disc.

If you are upgrading from win98 to XP you are going to have to get the right drivers, and possibly flash the bios to the latest version.

If you have a name brand computer like hp go to their website support section and see if the xp drivers are avaible.

If it is not a name brand the chances are you will need to download and install chipset drivers, as well as device drivers.

More information about your machine will give you more answers with direct links.
