Norton Speed Disk 2GB HDD 25 Hours ???

By Casemaker ·
Hi,
I have a pc that got a virus. It got the w32.elkern.4926
w32.klez.h@mm
w32.nimda.a@mm(dll)
w32.nimda.a@mm(dr)
The hard drive filled to capacity and slowed down to a crawl. The customer tried to remove some files and programs to free up space before I got it but no luck. He tried defrag and it would not work. I cleaned the virus and got the system to boot but when I run Norton Speed Disk it has taken 25 hours to complete 50%.
Any fixes that you know about. I did run some HDD test with Microscope and the HDD passed.
Thanks

The klez virus is a variant of the magistr virus. go to Norton and download the removal tool for both and print out the removal instructions, follow them line by line . This just happened to me. The virus fills the hardrive, then starts deleted every other file until all files are gone on shared drives, and mapped drives. and the system runs extremly slow. this may help you.

For Klez - try this:
http://www.antivirus.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_KLEZ.H (remove any spaces in the url).

For Nimda try:
http://www.antivirus.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=PE_NIMDA.A-O

Once you are sure virus is gone (use online scanner such as www.pandasoftware.com or www.trendmicro.com , turn off screen savers, set power settings to Never, check the registry HKLM_Software_Microsoft_Windows_CurrentVersion_RunServices and _Run for thinigs that shuld not run.

OS is Win98? PC make? IBM? Compaq? You can also try starting the PC in safe mode and run NDD there. If you want to see exactly what is running, download Process Viewer at
http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3001-2094-2084406.html or get the Process Viewer off of a Norton Systemsworks CD. For each process you see, search for the file on the PC or in the registry and see what it is.

Cheers!

THe Klez virus is also known to attack antivirus software. It probably attempted to disable the Norton. Norton uses a system of tagging files to facilitate it's functionality, and I think the viruses probably disrupted or damaged those tags. This would explain the extraordinary time required to run it. I'll bet the HD is running non-stop during this whole process, right?
Try reinstalling all Norton utilites and Antivirus software and try running the speedisk again. Also make sure there is adequate swap space on the HD. Adequate means around 300-500MB free space in this case. Small drives don't respond well to Norton utilities without enough free space.
