Not Printing From Correct Tray In DOS

By Robotech ·
I have a Windows 98SE PC connected to an HP 2200DTN Laser Jet printer via LPT1, the printer is shared across the network via the Win 98 PC.
There is a DOS based program that we use that prints to the HP Laserjet printer on LPT1. When a letter sized document is sent, it automatically pulls letter sized paper from the correcct tray, and when a legal sized document is sent it also pulls it from the correct tray.

We also have a Windows XP machine that runs the same DOS program. Since the XP machine doesn't have it's own printer, we mapped the shared printer to LPT1 by using the 'net use' command.

The problem is that when the Windows XP machine prints, all documents are pulled from the tray containing legal sized paper, and I can't figure out why. HEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!

I have quite a few of these printers in my offices; unfortunately, they have all been upgraded to Windows XP.

The first place that I would look is to see how the XP box is recognizing the drivers for the printer share. Make sure that you can tell it to pull from the trays you want to be able to pull from.

HP changed a lot of their driver code between the 2100 and the 2200 models. Since you are using a DOS based program that does not allow you to designate the exact drawer to pull from, it needs to rely on the Windows drivers to decide. That is why you need to check the drivers on the XP box.

I got the latest XP drivers from HP's site, specific to the model: 2200DTN.
Since the print is done from a DOS based program, I doubt if the Windows drivers would play any role.

on the xp computer try using the windows 98 drivers not the XP driver for the printer. and see if that fixes it. Also try the windows compatibility wizard and tell xp that the dos program needs 98 instead and see what happens.
