"Not Responding" Lag for a few minutes

By brosnanc ·
I'm new at networking so I'm hopeing my problem is a simple overlooked one. Here's the problem, I have 10 computers that need to be connected to the internet as well as share files over the network. I have them all connected to a 16 port 10/100 switch. I have the server (just a high powered workstation with a lot of memory and disk space) plugged into the switch as well. The internet connection from the modem is also plugged into the switch. The system works as far as all computers have internet access and can share files from the shared folders on the server. The problem I'm having is that every 10-15 min the system seems to freeze on the client computers (not all of them at the same time but they all do it). If you press Ctrl-Alt-Delete the screen pops up fine and you can see that everything is "Not Responding." If you leave it be for about five minutes the programs will work fine again until the next time it does it about 10-15 min away. I'm hoping that I'm just making a newbie mistake, possible in how I actually wired the computers together. Does anyone have a solution?

I think your computers may be trying to browse the network identifying connected clients and network topology.
