Nothing in the Add/Remove Programs list

By Benjamin ·
Hello all:

I have a Compaq laptop with Windows 98SE as the OS. I removed a program via add/remove in the control panel and the app. was removed without any problems and as I was going to uninstall another program, there was NOTHING in the add/remove programs box. I have rebooted, defragged, scan disked and all that with no luck. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Sounds like a corruption in the registry to me. You can try reloading Windows, but I don't think it will change anything. Your apps may have to be reloaded. As far as getting rid of additional programs, some will have uninstall options in the Programs menu. If not, you will have to reinstall the apps you don't want in order to get them listed on the Add/Remove list.

For some reason, when uninstalling the app., everything under the registry for uninstall information was deleted. I just upgraded to ME so that's how I got around it. Thanks for your help!

Some programs do not register in the Add/Remove. Many programs do have their own Uninstall feature though. I would attempt to locate the Uninstall before just deleting the program. A good place to look is first is in Start/Programs and find the program group and look for the uninstall. If not there then find where the program is located on your hard drive and look in that folder for the uninstall. If you cant find an uninstall then you just have to delete the program manually.

This problem happened to me a few months ago.
I had to re-install windows from scratch, and
all my applications. Since then, I make a
mirror fo my C: drive on another physical
drive in case it happens again.Windows sucks.
