notification software

I am looking for a low cost(free would be great) tool for monitoring a network remotely. Kaseya provides a tool but I am looking for a different product. It needs to monitor a desktop/server, send me an alert and then allow me to access the box remotely. Any ideas?

Have you tried VNC www.realvnc.com/

It is free, however with free there are security risk and you don,t get alerts and no encryption.

I've been using it for a long time.

Or you use remote desktop, the problem with that is you have to log off anyone who is using the pc at the time where you don't have to with VNC.

What do you attach? If attach means connect then you can connect when you want and setting it up is not hard "Heard of Google"

Hi there,
A friend put me onto Nagios, which I personally haven't setup, but i've seen it in action and it appears quite impressive.

As far as remote access is concerned, I have good success with any of the VNC range of tools. It is unlikely (?) that you would need to log someone off the server before you could log on, but even if you did, when you have an alert that needs to be followed up on, which takes precedence?. Same applies for the desktop in my opinion.

regards
