Novell 3.2 "Creating Netware volume err

By ax435 ·
I receive the following error
“Error Writing volume information; unable to lock disk”
When I attempt to create a Netware partition on a 18 GB drive.
Then followed by a short term allocation error.
Also a message this program (install.NLM)will stop working properly.

Novell 3.2 "Creating Netware volume err

Depending on if the drive is IDE or SCSI the answer may be different. SCSI controllers & drives have worked with Novell 3.2 just fine, but IDE may require the latest drivers/BIOS update/drive translation (the last one's a stretch, though).

So assuming it's IDE, make sure you have tried IDE.DSK, & ISADISK.DSK in their latest versions. There may be an issue with NetWare and IDE drives over 8GB, but I'm not sure if it really was or has been resolved.

Also, try creating a smaller NetWare partition and check the behaviour that way.

The following is Novell's website recommendation to resolve a locked device error:

1- wait for a while: the task in process may complete and free the device
2 - retry the action that resulted in the error
3 - load Monitor.nlm, delete all userconnections and disable logins
4 - for a disk device error, unload NLM programs (other than the device driver) that may be using the disk. Dismount all volumes on the disk.
If you have tried all of the above without success, contact your Novell Authorized Reseller representative or the drive manufacturer.

I would also check to make sure that you have enough RAM to handle the new volume.
The memory requirement for each DOS volume is:
M=.023 x volume size (in MB) /block size

The Memory requirements for each volume with added name space is:
M=.032 x volume size (in MB) / block size

The total memroy required is the sum of each volume's requirement + 2Mb rounded to the next higher Mb (with a minimum server memory requirement of4Mb). Actual require

The total memory required is the sum of each volume's requirement + 2Mb rounded to the next higher Mb (with a minimum server memory requirement of 4Mb). Actual requirements depend on many variables, but you can estimate your server memory requirements using the formulas.

You can check the Server Memory Statistics from the Resource Utilization option in MONITOR to check your current memory usage.

Lack of the required minimum memory on a Novell Server WILL NOT prevent you from creating a volume. It will prevent you from Mounting the new volume, but not from Creating it. So your problem is not memory.
Your locked status is the result of a user activity, or server activity on the drive you are trying to manipulate.
Disconnecting all users and disabling login should give you enough freedom to perform your required tasks. If not, you will have to look into NLM's and resources you can turnoff temporarily.
If all of that fails, simply bring up the server with a Server -NA statement to start the server without any additional activity and no user access.
Remember to shut down and reboot when done.

Not sure of the environment while you are attempting to create the volume. Whenever I create a volume I am the only connection on the Server. I think you may be getting a bogus error message. Normally when the short term allocator message pops upit is becuase the available memory (above 16 MB) cannot be accessed by Netware. This problem is resolved by mounting the existing volumes including SYS: AFTER all memory is registered. See the TID 11192 at Novell.com/support. Hope this helps.
