NT/98 HARD DISK FORMATTING

By kbyouth ·
I recenty installed a hard disk to my system, which has been recognized by NT, but not by 98. NT cannot complete the format on the disk and 98 does not even show that a new hardware has been added. How do I force 98 to recognize that a new hardware has been added.

If NT was unable to complete the format, then the format of the HDD is now corrupt. You must use FDISK to create a new partition BEFORE you can format it with Win98. If FDISK doesn't see the drive, then there's a hardware problem.

sometimes one operating system doesn't like to let another take over. use your NT startup disk to format. Then, use a win 98 disk and format again. Win 98 should load. If you want both operating systems, be sure to load win 98 first. Hope this helps.

If HDD was formated by WinNT as NTFS, Win98 will not see it. WInNT will see both. As it was suggested repartition and reformat it. If you want Win98 to see and access the drive it has to be partitioned/formated as FAT/FAT32.

When a hd is fomated and nt is installed it creates a special partition on the hd that fdisk and fomat can not see. You need to use delpart from microsoft or a third party software like wipeout. You can see if there is space on the hd by using fdiskand looking at the size reported and compair it to the real size. After using the delpart then reboot and go into the cmos and set auto detect for the drive see if it shows up if not it could be hardware, try switching the connector from the cd rom on the mainboard with the hd and try auto detect a second time if this dont work try the drive on a second computer if you have one. If it works the controlers on the first one are bad, replace the main board. If it dont work the hard drive mabie bad.if this dose not work email me I can suggest other things to try, like drive managers ect

1.Check master/slave jumper on HDD and any other device you may have on IDE
2.Check in BIOS if the new HDD is correct detected
3.Some motherboards needs to place de devices on IDE slots in strict order: first, second,...
4.Some old CD-ROM could not support on the same IDE cable the new generation of HDD
5.You don't need to force Windows 98 to recognize the new HDD. This procces is automaticaly if you follow the previous steps
If you can give me more detail about your computer configuration, I can give you more help.
