NT fails to detect the CD ROM

    Locked

    by guy d ·

The CD ROM has disappeared from both My Computer and the BIOS.

Am running a Micron 166 Mhz PC with NT 4.0 and Serv Pack 6.

Things I have tried with no success:

    1. 2 different CD ROMs and cables.

    2. Tried both Pri and Sec sockets on theMotherboard. The Hard Drive works in both but the CD ROM does not.

    3. Put the “bad” CD ROM in another PC, it worked.

    4. Updated the BIOS th the latest version.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

      Guy D,
Perhaps you should think about locating motherboard drivers. Sounds like your IDE disk controllers may not have the proper driver loaded. I have seen several machine’s cd-rom disappear suddenly and after installing motherboard drivers they reappeared. Give it a try.

I’m assuming that this isn’t a master/slave issue because you’re leading me to beleive that this has worked before.

I wonder if just setting all of your IDE configuration to auto will makethe thing detect at post.

Other thing I can think of is that you have a bad power connector. You mention putting the HD on both primary and secondary, but I’m unsure whether you used also changed the power connector.

      Good luck to you

1)Open the CMOS Control panel and check to see if the cdrom is configured.
2)Manually install the cdrom thru the add new hardware and due a force install of the cdrom, make sure that you have the correct drivers for NT to support the cdrom.

Hi, What you call the CMOS panel, I refer to as the BIOS panel. Everything there looks OK except that the CD ROM isn’t there. The IDE configuration option is set to AUTO.

When I go to START|SETTINGS there is no Administrative option.

        I giveup!

      5. Also put the CD ROM (as slave)on the same cable as the HDD. CD ROM did not configure.

By the way, the CD was working on this PC previously.

The problem you have is purely in the BIOS settings:
Afer making sure of the followings:
      1-IDE cable is o.k
2-Jumper settings on the CD ROM is o.k
      3-Power cable is o.k
      4-CD ROM drive is o.k
      do the following:
1-Reset the cmos of the motherboard
      2-Reconfigure your cd rom
3-If Auto detect does not work ,choose custom then cd rom.
if your bios can detect the CD ROM ,restart your NT and check to see if it can detect the CD ROM ,if not then START-SETTINGS-CONTROL PANEL-SCSI ADAPTERS-DRIVERS- and then add the driver for the CD ROM (download it from the web)
I hope this can solve your problem
      Have a nice day

Thank you for your reply Ramy. Before I had a chance to try your suggestions, my boss sent the PC to a vendor for repair. Thanks again.
