NT File Server corrupting Excel Files, Users on XP Workstations

By jonathan.meighan@gmail. ·
Hi

I have a Windows NT 4 File Server. I have recently installed new XP SP2 Workstations Since the upgrade, the users have been having trouble corrupting Excel workbooks.

The Excel worksheets are set to be "Shared" (Excel setting More than 1 user can Open and Edit at the same time). Firstly the Excel files lock open (even though the user has closed it) after the lock has been closed on the server the next time they attempt to open the file: The file corrupts and can not be retrieved. On some occations the Excel temperary file is saved in the directory and this can be retrieved.

The Issue has only started since the new work stations have been installed, they were previosly running NT workstations and the Issue seems to be only with EXCEL files.

The Users have full access to the directory that contain the files

Any help would be very much appreciated

Jonathan

XP and NT4 have different versions of NTFS

by Why Me Worry? In reply to NT File Server corrupting ...

XP uses NTFS version 5 and NT4 uses an on older version of NTFS ( I am assuming your XP mahcines use NTFS and not FAT32). You should really upgrade your NT4 server to Windows 2003 or Windows 2000 server at the least, because it seems as if the version difference in the NTFS file systems is what's creating your problem.

XP and NT4 have different versions of NTFS

Thanks for your reply,

XP PCs are running NTFS, Upgrading the Server is not really an option we would not be allowed to do this as every other PC here is running NT workstation . Any other suggestions?

We are currently running Excel 2k would you think upgrading this to a newer version would be beneficial?

The problem is not Excel or Office, it's the underlying file system

by Why Me Worry? In reply to XP and NT4 have different ...

You can upgrade office if you like, but I don't think that will be the solution to your problem. Your problem is that you are running a 3 year old desktop OS with an almost 10 year old server OS and the server OS is having issues with the newer version of files on NTFS v5 with XP.

Are you running at least SP6 for NT4 on your server?

Make sure you have the latest service pack on the server, as that too may be a problem.

Hi....

Hi...It seems to be an Antivirus access protection issue as well Temp file folder access permission issue. So you process has been block either by an antivirus protection or by temp folder permission.
