NT hard drive in Dell

By rmodd99 ·
I have 2 Dell inspiron 7000 One has an NTFS on the hard drive for NT and the other has fat 32 win 98. The NT Inspiron was damaged with a solution. But the hard drive is still good. Can I switch the hard drives and do I
them.

Provided the hardware on both computers is identical, you can switch the hard drives without having to reconfigure anything. If there are differences, you can still switch the drives but will need to contend with setting up the drivers for any hardware that does not match.
The win98 hard drive can go into nearly any other computer with the same BIOS easily as it will detect most standard hardware on boot up. Different BIOS companies may or may not work as some detect the hard drive slightly differently, forcing a repartition before it will work.

I agree with the previous post assesment of your problem but would like to add a comment. Win9X is plug and play while WINNT is not. Make sure the BIOS setting for "Plug and play operating system = Y/N" is set correctly for the drive you choose to install in the remaining laptop. That setting will allow WIN9X to assign interupts and I/O addresses as opposed to using default settings and risking conflicts.

Not Silly at all, It worked out. Thanks for the help. Thanks for sending the answer to me. The install worked and I was able to get the data, but I will have to install the service pack 4 again, since it reverted back to SP1. Again Thanks
