    Odd mouse behavior in XP

I am running windows xp 64bit w/ sp2. My USB mouse has been fine since I installed xp a few months ago. But yesterday, all of a sudden it just started moving funny. I figured out it actually covers more ground when I move it left and upwards than when I move it right and downwards. In other words if I move the mouse evenly from left to right over and over again it actually eventually ends up on the left side of the screen. I messed around with my mouse properties in the control panel to see if I could alleviate the situation. I noticed that if I have the “Enhance pointer precision” ON then it helps the problem from being so drastic, but the disparity in movement is still there. I have a lot of applications installed on my computer and a fair amount of hardware as well. I am certainly no novice with diagnosing and fixing computers, but I cannot find any information on the internet that related to this issue. I uninstalled all the applications that I had installed in the past week. I unplugged all of my usb devices except for my mouse. I cleaned the registry. I uninstalled any drivers that were associated to any of my usb devices (like my Wacom tablet). I have rebooted numerous times (from cold). My mouse is a wireless logitech USB mouse. However I unplugged it and plugged in in an older usb mouse, and have the same exact problems. I booted into safe mode; same problem. I booted into a previous installation of xp (32 bit), and had NO problems. I feel like somehow, something in windows got corrupt or reconfigured and its now telling the mouse to track differently. I tried finding information about mouse settings in the registry, but could find no information about assigning different track rates to particular directions of movement. Any one have any suggestions?? I am trying to avoid having to reinstall windows and all of my apps (and then possibly run into this problem again one day)

…if you had uninstalled the device drivers for your mouse.

You say that you unplugged your mouse and tried an older mouse – same problem. Don’t you think it may be the mouse driver that is causing the problem?

Uninstall and let XP find the drivers upon re-boot.
