Open file w/windows symbol

By plumbfluffy ·
This is probably the original stupid question, but, Files from the internet sometimes download with the "flying windows" icon. When I try to open them, I get the "open with" dialogue box. What should I use to open these files? I have tried Notepad and Word, but I get symbols on the pagem not anything I can read.

Open file w/windows symbol

This is not a stupid question! It all depends on what type of file you downloaded! If the file has a .ZIP file extension, then it needs a program like WinZip to open it (WinZip.EXE). If it has a .DOC it would be Word (WINWORD.EXE) that opens it. If it's .EXE, then you should be able to run or double click it and it should run on its own. .PDF requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.

To find out what the extension is, remember where you downloaded the file to. In Windows Explorer, go to View or Tools and look for the Folder Options choice. In that applet, set or check all of the boxes to show all files and show the full path in the title bar. Uncheck the boxes that say to hide extensions of known file types. Press Apply then the button to set all folders to have the same view as the current folder and close Windows Explorer. Re-open it and all folders should have the same view that you set up. You may need a specific program to open the file you are downloading. Post a comment with the file including the extension and I will help you find the program you need to open it.
