Options for FTP server redundancy

By Pazman ·
We are currently using WS_FTP server to provide FTP services to business partners. What are some of the ways to setup redundancy so that FTP services remain available if there were to be a problem (hardware failure, etc) with the primary server?

first you need 2 isp's and then the connection failover software/hardware.

I know the latest kerio winroute has this capabillity.

www.f5.com has this capability also for the ISA server www.microsoft.com/isa.

I was hoping for a more detailed answer by someone who actually has done this and has it up and running / tested. Also, what happens if someone uploads a file to a server, and then the server crashes? Is it possible to setup a cluster using shared disk?

You can find some type of syncing software such as NSI or Veritas if you need to keep files in sync... and have an almost cluster like setup with out needing to worry about clustering or compatability.. I believe IPSWITCH ahs a HA solution fo rits whatsup gold, maybe they have something in the works for HA FTP server also..

depending on your firewall and NAT.. you could keep a 2nd FTP up with same accounts presetup. if primary fails then change NAT on Firewall to forward the old FTP iP to the standby.. little more work..
