Outlook will not open

By efray01 ·
One of my co-workers has Outlook 97 on a Windows 98 computer. When we double click on Outlook, the following message appears:

"Unable to open your default mail folders. Outlook could not start because a location to send and receive mail could notbe found. To add a location, such as a personal folder file, double-click the Mail icon in Windows Control Panel."

This means that Outlook has either not been configured, the configuration is damaged, or does not have access (or permissions) to the mail folders. Make sure he is online and connected to the server successfully. Then double click on the mail icon in control panels and make sure that the mail services required are set up and the user has a profile on the system.

I usually see this when a user is working on someone else's machine and they are trying to open someone else's mailbox (due to theprofile) or the machine has not been configured in the first place.

Right click on the MS OUTLOOK icon and select properties. Then double click on MS Exchange Server > select the Delivery Tab and you'll notice the top drop down box is empty. Select a delivery location. Click Ok and Ok. Start Outlook.

Good Luck,

It sounds like outlook lost the path to their pab or pst file.Be sure your logged into the network or isp first. If on a network and using exchange is the mail folders stored on the users hard drive? Ask the administrator about this. If it's on their hard drive try this. Here's the fun part, close all programs and open the control panel. Then go to ether mail and fax or just mail. Go to profiles and select the user and properties. Then delivery to see where the mail is going. And if it dose notfind it brows to their box joe.pab or joe.pst and click ok. There is more but try this first.

I apologize to those who replied so quickly to my dilemma. I have been on vacation and have only returned today. I will not be able to utilize your suggestions until next week. Then I will let you know whether they worked or not. Thank you.
