Outlook wont connect to Exchange Server

By Amscola33 ·

I just purchased a new HP computer with Outlook 2007. I am trying to connect to my school's exchange server (2003), but it keeps telling me that Outlook needs to be connected to the internet. I was wondering if anyone could point my in the right direction. There are so many things online and I am not that well versed when it comes to exchange servers.

Are you connected to the schools intranet?

Is the schools email accessible over the internet, or just their intranet?

Does Outlook Web Access work (OWA)?

Did you setup the proper exchange server and other account settings?

Outlook connecting to Exchange

How does your computer connect to your schools LAN? Wirelss, Ethernet, VPN? Is your pc able to obtain an IP address?

Usually most schools will have some sort of documentation on their website with regards to mail client config etc.

Have you setup an email account in outlook already, ie pop or imap? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you need to add an exchange account through the mail control panel in the control panel if an exchange account wasn't specified when outlook was initially set up. You could be receiving the internet access message as a result of your school's firewall blocking traffic to your pop/imap account (if you have one).

Outlook 2007 needs the the default gateway to be set up before it will access the exchange server. This should be done in DHCP scope options 003 router.
