OWA access through exchange w/ frontend and backend server

By ssstewar ·
my question is that currently we have exchange 2003 running on 1 server at a central location. we have 3 locations and servers at each site connected by a 768k link. i'd like to get exchange running at all sites and use the frontend/backend option to reduce our wan traffic and make the mailboxes local to where the user's computer is. i have done this... sorta. what i mean by sorta is when i choose the frontend option, if the mailbox is not on the frontend server (i thought i read somewhere mailboxes weren't even supposed to be on the frontend server, it's just supposed to act as a proxy?), then externally when a user tries to access owa, they can't access their mailbox because it's redirecting them to an internal server that the public doesn't know about. i heard i might need another dns record somewhere (but i don't know what or where) and then have to do some dnat in my pix (but i'm not 100% on how to do that either). thank you and i really appreciate it.
