P2 PC not recognising CD drive

    Locked

    by ameliapumo ·

I work for a charity and have a P2 Pc donated to us. Hpwever, the Hard Drive is very small and there is no CDRom on it. I installed a better HD and everything is fine. However, when I try to istall the CD, I cannot get windows (98) to recognise it.

On boot up, the CD is recognised, and in the bios. When windows starts, it asks for various drivers, which I cannot install as they are on my Win 98 CD.

I have tried installing it as master slave, sec master, sec slave etc and altered jumper settings etc. There is nothing wron with CDRom.

I must be missing something as I have done this loads of times before with no problems ( i have an hons degree in computer science)

Did you copy the CABS folder to the local disc off of the win98 CD? Copy it to Windows/Options folder, then when you reboot see if you can point the hardware wizard there for whatever driver it is looking for.

If you’re sure the drivers you need are on your Win98 disc, try booting from the Win98 disc itself (it’s been a while since I’ve gotten into Win98, I’m assuming you can boot from the disc). You should be able to add the hardware from there. You may need to make sure the CDROM is including in the boot process in BIOS.

Boot from a W98 startup disk.

At the DOS prompt, type in setup.

You can re-install W98 over itself. Just make sure to direct the Installer to use the same folder C:\Windows.
This should take care of most driver and Windows file issues.

I also recommend downloading the drivers for the chip-set on the motherboard.
If it is an Intel set, you will need to follow the links to the archived chip-set drivers.

I would try combining some of these answers. Boot to a 98 startup disk, then copy the CABS files. Reboot to windows and when it asks for the files you can point them to the cabs.

Has BIOS been updated since you got the system? You may want to see if there is an update to your BIOS. Even though your current BIOS version can see the device, it may not be current enough to handle it in the Windows environment.

There should be no need to “install” the CD drive. If Windows does not see it, it will not see it.
      Boot to Safe Mode.
Remove any references to CD drives or controllers in the Device Manager.
REM out any references to CD drives in AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files.
      Reboot.
If it is not recognized on bootup, you may have a cabling or jumper issue. Have you tried a different drive?

I am assuming that the CD ROM is new and works if installed in another system?? Has the 98 system recently been reloaded?? there is a old time virus that in windows 95/98 disables the CD-ROM I believe it was the ANTI-EXE virus, if you don’t have a update AV on the system take its HD to a system that does and hook it up in place of that system’s CD and run a full Virus scan on it. If everything checks out try the 98 startup disk and start system with cd support does the drive work in DOS mode??? If so and no viruses detected run the system file check in the system information dialog. You could also try real mode drivers like 95 used. This would be much the same as the 98 boot disc you can use it’s config.sys and autoexec.bat to get the command syntax.
