Paradox vs Access

By apereczky ·
Does anyone know of any industry research regarding which database application software is better - Paradox v9 or Access 2000? Has anyone had experience using both products and which was better to use?

Paradox vs Access

by roc180 In reply to Paradox vs Access

I am all too familiar with this question, currently I am working on a project to rewrite all of a companies existing Paradox apps with Access. The main database engine specific advantage you will gain from Access is flexibility and better scaleability than PDOX(Paradox). From a programming standpoint Access far out performs PDOX, while PDOX is ODBC compliant, trying to integrate it into other RDBMS systems(SQL Server, Oracle, etc..) is an uphill battle. Not to mention Access's VBA code library is more robust and usefull than PDOX's code library. Save yourself a lot of headaches and stick with Access you'll be thankfull.

Mostly agree with reply 1. Five-seven years back this *was* a valid discussion from many points of view, but presently it solely is so from the point of view of the architectural purists. For them, still the programming aspects of Paradox PAL are more OO and 'abstract' than those of VBA which basically is simple 3GL.
Development budgets, and marketshare, have put most other cards in the MS camp. Indeed performance, connectivity and a few other aspects have now really been better for Access andlimited for Paradox.

Which still doesn't invalidate the ideas behind Paradox; OO-like '4GL' coding can still be done in quite a number of larger-scale database programming environments like Progress, Informix, Focus etc. However they are considerably bigger and more complex (and more scalable) than the Paradox/MS-Access category.

Have fun,

I had used both before but not these two newer version you refer to. I had done programming on both database. The former uses PAL and the latter uses VB. I would say Access would be easier (at least for me).
Access being one of the application in the Microsoft suite will have lots of support available when you hit a problem. Just do a search on both products and you will be able to see the difference in support available.
