Partition Problems on PC

By boogles ·
Here's the story: My clients computer went berserk, beyond the point of even being able to recover it with scanreg *sigh*, so we went into DOS mode and recovered all of his wanted documents (using my handy zip drive). Then we tried once more (ditch attempt) to get windows working. Nothing. He had decided at that point it was allready pretty much worthless anyway, so we went to format. I formatted C drive, restarted, and then removed the partition, restarted, and put the partition back in again. Then restarted. It was back up and running off my bootdisk, so I typed in "C:"... nothing. Abort, retry, fail? In a vain attempt I pounded R (retry) several times (wishful thinking) and then pressed f (fail) and got a message about the partition name being invalid. So, I went back to the bootdisk, ran fdisk again... looked at the partition information and I said "unknown". It was then that I realised that it had never PROMPTED me for a name when creating the partition. So, I deleted it again, then tried making it again... still unknown. I thought it might be my version of Fdisk being wacky... so I tried three other bootdisks. Same problem... Is there any help for this computer?

Did you get it back to front?
Did you format the disk after you partitioned the hard drive(correct) or before (incorrect).

Sorry about skimping on that detail, and yeah I did do it the "incorrect way". (Format then Fdisk) Kindof a stupid mistake.

Boot computer, when Startup screen appears, press designated key to enter BIOS,check the configuration to see if the disk is being recognized.

Boot computer with startup disk at command prompt, type fidsk /mbr (press enter),then type Sys c:

Reboot computer and try Fdisk, partition and reformat

May seem like a dumb question but did you format the drive? You didn't mention this needed step.

"format c: /s"

Yes, that is the exact parameter I used for the format of C drive. And no question is a dumb one. :)
