pausing in Windows 98

By zarni ·
I have a dell laptop running Windows 98SE, Office 2000 and PCCillin 2000 that is connected to a Windows NT 4.0 server running exchange 5.5. The machine pauses for about 25 25 seconds every 2.5 minutes consistantly. I have formated and reinstalled everything. Does anyone have any idea what can cause this? It usually has Word and Outlook open.

Thanks
Marc

How much free RAM and hard drive space do you have?

If you are low on either (128MB RAM, 500MB HDD are my W98 minimums) you have a lot of work going on with Windows and virtual memory.

Next, I would check the auto-save settings in Word. It could be that Word is doing an unconditional auto-save every 2.5 minutes.

If it's just pausing then there is probably some task using up all of your cpu cycles. Get an app like ATM and see if any process is hogging all of the processor time. Likely suspects are the anti-virus app or Office2000 background tasks like FindFast.

Here's a link to ATM:
