pc cannot find scanner

By gerda1 ·
I would like to know how to configure my pc so that I can scan. PC says cannot find scanner. I have three scanners I have bought two within the last six months, and all of them tell the same message about not being able to find scanner.

pc cannot find scanner

There is not enough info as to what operating system or the type of scanner you are trying to install.

The installation depends on what interface you are using,a Parallel,USB or SCSI scanner

Parallel scanner requires a passthru connection for your parallel printer

SCSI will need to be terminated as the last device in the chain

This installation info provided for Windows 9x
Turn off the computer, connect the scanner to the parallel port, then connect printer to the scanner pass thru port, plug in power cord

Power on computer and PnP should detect New Hardware,if so proceed to follow onscreen instructions

If PnP did not detect the New Hardware

Open the Control Panel,double-click the Add New Hardware icon, choose to select the hardware manufacturer fro list, select manufacture from the left-pane and the model of scanner from right-pane
click on have disk and proceed to install following the on screen instructions

Using USB port make sure that your usb port is enabled,

Boot computer and press the key to enter SETUP from the startup screen,go to Advanced menu and locate USB port in list, check to see if the port is enabled, make the appropiate choice, theh save and exit

If Win95 then you will need to install the USB drivers and if it is WinXP it is possible that the drivers for the scanners didn't support USB. Assuming the scanner is USB. Might also check and see if USB ports are connected inside computer.

Just to add to what is already there;

For a parallel port scanner:
1. Make sure port is set to ECP/EPP in BIOS settings.
2. You may need to have the printer turned on for the scanner to work.

For a USB port scanner:
1. If you have Windows 95, upgrade to 98 or Me. Only version "C" is USB capable, and that doesn't always work with some chipsets.
2. Make sure that the USB driver for the motherboard is installed. This is often part of the IDE or INF driver.

For any version:
Check in device manager for yellow "!" or "?" these device errors must be corrected before the hardware can be expected to work properly.
