PC does not recognize my new CD writer

By ujsr ·
I have a HP Pavilion Desktop PC. I recently purchased a new LG CD writer, DVD player combo drive and installed it in my PC. For some reason my PC recognizes it as a regular CD drive and not as a CD writer or a DVD player. I tried to install ROXIO Easy CD Creater 5 but the system poped up a error message "The installation Software did not find at least one supported drive in this computer System. Do you wish to continue the intallation ?" When I choose YES as my option to proceed to install the software, it wouldn't intall the software instead it quit's the intalation process with out prompting an thing.

What OS are you running on your PC? If you are running XP or 2000 it might not be compatible with your OS. Did you install the software that came with your CD Writer/DVD?? Sometimes if you are running XP the OS will automatically install drivers for what it thinks your hardware needs and you need to update the drivers to the ones that the manufacturer gave you with the hardware.

Since your system recognizes it as a CD-ROM you should be able to insert the isntallation CD that came with your unit and install the proper drivers and .ini information to make the system recognize it. The installation CD should try to autorun when you insert it into the drive.

Unfortunately, HP's Pavillion line PCs are built in specific configurations, and may not recognize all the attributes of new hardware added. How old is your Pavillion? It may have a BIOS that does not support DVD technology. Also, if you're running Windows NT 4.0, the operating system itself does not offer support for DVD drives. You might be able to flash the BIOS by going to HP's website and listing your PC's model number.

Your answer was very helpful. I tried a new CD Writer(this time it is onle a CD writer and not a CD writer/DVD reader combo) and the system recognized it and I was able to install the software too. Thanks a bunch.

Are you sure you install the drivers for the new cd-rom? If you did, then did you set the jumpers on the cd-rom right. Check that if your not sure. Don't install the software until you get the pc to recognizes the cd-rom. If it's not working right on the the product's website and see if it's compatible with the windows your using. Check for all the requirements and see if you have all of them. That's the only thing I know. good Luck
