pc does not turn off

By jon_w31 ·
HP pavilion 3030 200MHz 64MB ram.
When I turn on mains power the pc starts automaticly. When I select shut down from win ME I get the safe to turn off message but the system will not shut itself down and if I press the power button or hold it in i just get a beep. the pc will not power off until i switch it off at the mains. there is no option in the bios to set the power button function. In normal use within windows pressing the power button will put the system in suspend mode
Can you help?
Thanks

Open the case to see if the power button is not broken ( it's only a piece of plastic ). As for the system not shutting itself down, there should be a check list on the Microsoft site but turn off things such as sounds on exit ( a sound file could be corrupt ). Also turn off any anti-virus functions for a on shutdown.
As for switching it off at the mains - this will not do the machine any harm but might not be all that great for your back ;-)

Do you know if your computer is an AT type power supply or ATX?

I belive that if it's not an ATX then it won't shut down until you press the button, it will stop at the 'Safe to turn off' screen waiting for you to pysically switch it off.

As for the button not working, look for something broken as suggested earlier.

You should also check in the BIOS and see if energy saving mode is turned on. It will sometimes stop your computer from shutting down. If you use a lesser setting (min) if available it may correct the problem. You could also have programs running inthe background that are hanging your system.

Older PC have AT power supply, and i think you have this kind of power supply. This kind of power supply have a physical switch that you need to push everytime you turn on and off.

Compare to ATX power supply that the motherboard can trigger thepower supply to turn off. With the released of this ATX you can even turn on your PC with keyboard If your motherboard can support Power On by Keyboard Support.

In pressing the power button there is option in the BIOS where you can put it in INSTANT OFF, SUSPEND MODE, ETC..

Your system is certainly ATX system, though HP have different power cabling system into their motherboard.

Your computer doesn't turn off instantly. By ATX system, you would have to press the button for 4 seconds. Then it would turn off the machine. Otherwise, your power button is stuck.

By the way, HP have also arranged that you could use your space bar in your keyboard to turn-on the computer. Check your keyboard whether your space bar functioning correctly.

Your computer shouldturn itself automatically off when you choose shut-down from the start button in Windows. The reason it couldn't do is that you have disable the API/ACPI power saving feature ( in BIOS ). Enable that, and the most simple way is reinstalling ME, and you should get the automatic power-off feature back.

A bit difficult way is to add a new hardware. This new hardware is the power-saving-something, is related to your now-enabled power saving in BIOS.
