PC freezes when using Internet

By fathom ·
My PC does fine while using any other application. I can connect to the Internet using the dialup and not have a problem. The moment I execute my browser the PC freezes. I can open MS Outlook without a problem but the moment it checks for email...freeze. My curser doesn't freeze, everything else on the screen does. I don't even get the blue screen of death; not even a black screen. Ctrl-alt-delete doesn't even do anything. I have to hard boot to get things back to normal again. By the way, I'musing Win98. I've had this computer for about 1 year and have not seen this problem before until about 1 month ago. I didn't upgrade Internet Explorer. Please help.

Try emptying your Temporary Internet Files directory. This can be found (depending on your browser version, you didn't mention) under Tools/Internet Options/General tab in IE5 or View/Internet Options in IE4. While there, have a look at the settings, perhaps the cache is set too low: try increasing the size.

i suggest to scan your harddrive for errors (norton disk doctor), maybe a file is corrupted, or to install win again over your existing configuration that settings will keep unchanged, but files will be copied from the cd again, befor you can try touninstall the tcpip protocol and reinstall it instantly

If simply reinstalling windows doesn't help...you might try to clear the startup menu
1. Start | Run...type msconfig
2. click on the "startup" tab
3. uncheck all except for:
-system tray
-scan registry

also, try to reinstall network compnents
1. Start | Settings | Control Panel...network icon
2. remove all components installed (except for any refering to a NIC if you've got one)
3. then click on ADD | client
4. choose microsoft on the left, and client for microsoft networks on the right

after that you should have at least these 3 items
-client for MS Networks
-dialup adapter
-TCP/IP

if you're still having issues after this...It's my advise that you just go ahead and format the system

hope it helps

I removed all components installed (except for any refering to a NIC). Then I restarted my computer and everything I had removed was back. It fixed the problem.

Hi.. i have had the similar problem about 40 times...what i did was put a windows 98 cd in and stared to install it again... it does not take any of your settings away.. but instead it does a mask install which replaces all the files that may be corrupt or missing... and then try it.
it seems to give it a new freshness..
what kind of computer do you have?... if it is a pentium 150 or below you may have trouble running windows 98 and also win 98 recommends 64mb of ram to run correctly.
good luck hope this fixes it.

According to what you say, you seem to have a problem when you CONNECT to Internet with a MICROSOFT tool (Outlook or Internet Explorer I suppose). A component may be damaged. Open your Control Panel and choose add or remove programs. In the panel ofWindows Installation, remove the components Outlook and Internet Explorer, validate, then reinstall them again. These options could not exist according to the version of Windows you have.
If not solved, try to reinstall Windows :-(
because you canhardly say which component is damaged.
Good luck!
