PC keeps rebooting

By rmessier ·
Gateway PC 1GHz 256MB Ram with Windows ME installed. When it goes through a boot up, it almost gets to the Windows screen, then the screen turns black and reboots. It comes back and starts over again, this time going to a screen to where you can load it in SAFE mode. Sometimes it comes up in Safe mode, but most of teh time it just reboots. I have taken all the PCI cards out and have tried different memory, and get the same results. I even tried another power supply, thinking maybe it was power restting. Any Ideas?
Thanks........

Go into safe mode and go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | System. Go to Device manager and look for possible hardware conflicts. I would start by removing the drivers for the video card. Also check your gateway drivers for Intel motherboard drivers. There are some systems that have an IDE patch that needs to be installed for it to run correctly.

Instead of going to Safe Mode choose Logging (I think it's still the 2nd menu option on ME). Then get BLA (Boot Log Analyser) from this site:

http://www.aumha.org/freeware.htm

The Bootlog.txt file is probably hidden so you'll need to change the attribute to make it visible to bla (should be in the c directory).

See what you find as far as load failures or what the last operation was in the boot sequence.

Needless to say, if you can't get a copy of bla.exe due to your current problems you can still look at the bootlog.txt file with NotePad if you can get to Safe Mode. It's just not as easy to filter out just the failed items to see what's going on.

Rebooting often is caused due to
1.CPU fan either not working or getting over heated.Do change the cooling unit & check.
2.CPU or any PCI not seated properly in the slots .

Do check the above & revert back.

Thanks,
Kias
