PC not switching on

By ronel_minnie ·
My pc does not want to switch on and yes it is plugged in correctly. I checked the powersupply and the screen, speakers, fan, etc. all works fine. Is it the motherboard or CPU and how can I test this?
The power button on the box gave some trouble and had to be pressed a few times before the pc would switch on. I also checked this button and all the wires are still connected correctly.
I would really appreciate any help I can get.

Are there any fans turning and LEDs lit?

Check everything is seated properly. CPU,memory, video, etc. Take it out and put it back in to make sure.

No result? Try removing memory and see if you get BIOS beeps. Try your CPU in another PC and vice-versa. same again for memory.

Good Luck

Gulp, suppose you could check your power fittings, as well. Take them off and back on.

Last thing, try another PSU, if you can a hold of one ...

Starting to think that it's the motherboard.

Before you try tearing into the power supply (which I DO NOT recommend unless you are an electrician), try removing the front of the chassis off of your system and pressing directly on the power button. It may be something as simple as the chassis no longer properly sitting on the front of the system.

It is possible that the power switch itself has failed.

Try placing a jumper across the leads the power switch connects to on the motherboard.

Or, the switch can be checked with an ohm-meter.
Unplug the power switch leads.
Connect the meter leads to the switch leads.
Push the button.
When the button is pressed, the meter should read close to zero ohms.
With the button not pressed, the meter should read an open.

I think the Chas has a good answer (I was going to post a similar one). Also, is the fan turning on from the Power Supply?
It is most likely the PS, MB, or switch. Has the macine been moved around recently? If so answer 1 would be the best bet, try reseating and reconnecting everything.

What type of box is this ?

HP likes a lite touch, or it acts like you double pressed power (turns on then off). Half press the power button and if it works fine power button fully pressed give double power cycle on/off to the PC.

OHM meter test will show this (0, open, 0) when the button is pressed and released.

If that means, try unattach the swith on connector from your mainboard. Don't use the swith on button from casing to start the pc. Use a pen to short the power on pin on mainboard. ( is where the connector attach to )
