PC Start to Move slowly and then freeze

By gchen ·
laptop is freeze up or starts to move/working very slow. I have defragmenter it and run the latest antivirus NAV 2003 and so far it has not detected any virus. It occurs only after working for a while and then the page start to blur and finally you can not see the letters on the windows. The icon from the mouse moves intermittent and finally you cannot do anything nor the window xp running on NTFS responds to any command except pressing the button to reset. This is the only way I can start working on the laptop. It's happen from time to time and so far I'm unable to find a solution.

Run Disk Keeper, Run Antivirus NAV 2003, Run another antivirus"Kaspersky". Run CHKDSK. This a Dell Inspiron 8100, 256MB of Memory. Pentium 3, 1,000MHZ, 32 NVDIA Video

When you notice the machine getting slow, open up Task Manager to the Processes tab to see what processes are eating up CPU time/memory resources.

By the time I open Task Manager, you can't see the screen. All letters or pictures from screen have faded it. It does from time while working on Excell, Word or Navigating in Internet. It happens even when working in small or large file or not even using internet. Help!

Are you by chance running both Anti-virus software packages at the same time? Norton is known for not being happy when ANY other anti-virus package is loaded at the same time.

Other thoughts: How many different programs are you running at once? How many different processes are running in the background (system tray)? Any error messages in yout event logs?

It almost sounds as if you are running a piece of software that has a serious memory leak in it.

No, I did not run both Anti-virus software packages at the same time. I removed and installed either antivirus to make sure it runs ok. So far, it hasn?t detected any virus.
When working for a while the laptop just suddenly start to move very slow and the view of the letter or pictures from the screen gets blur pictures until you can?t distinguish the position. When you move the mouse, you can see the movement of the mouse?s icon very slow or intermittent and finally you cannot do anything until resetting the PC. It doesn?t matter if you are running one program or several. It has happen even if you close all the windows and let the computer idle with the screen saver. No error message appears in my event logs. This laptop is using 256MB of RAM, 40GB of Hard Disk, Pentium III 1.0 Ghz and 32 MB NVDIA Geo Force. Running on Windows XP and NTFS.
Do you have any other suggestion? Thank you!

Please clarify what you mean by "the page start to blur and finally you can not see the letters on the windows" as I suspect this may be key to solving the problem.

Blur = Fuzzy Letter or icons start fading and screen star to move very slow until nothing else respond. Any other idea, besides increasing RAM?
Does the Start Icons on Task Bar consume resources and slower RAM?

Hi,

Pls increase your page file and virtual memory and see if that resolves your problem. Else, increase your RAM. If all fails, pls reinstall your OS as it's a normal practice to refurbish your station once a year to refresh your OS and drivers.

After upgraded RAM to 512MB, It did it again. However, I ran the pc on Safe Mode Network and open as much application as I could between Power Point, Excel and IE, but nothing happen. It ran fine. What is the next step? Thanks.
