PC starting by itself

By joe.brenchley@raymondcorp ·
I have a AMD Athalon PC running WinXP, everytime the phone rings the PC boots. Can find nothing in the modem settings or elsewhere to shut off the feature. Any suggestions?

This will be found in a program that answers calls, perhaps a fax program or an answering system program. You will need to look further for this answer...
Hope this helps.

After looking at the following answers, I am indeed incorrect. I read too quickly that the phone rang--I didn't realize the PC was OFF when it would boot. It is the wake on LAN setting. Sorry. Just reject my answer...

If you are really shutting down (not going into a "sleep mode" with a FAX/Answering software awaiting an incoming call, this is likely set in the BIOS by a "Wake on LAN" type configuration. You may need to reference your motherboard manual if you are not familiar with (or comfortable) working with your BIOS.

Good luck!

I also agree with answer number 2 to check the bios. It seems to me that it has nothing to do with wake on lan. It has to do with something similar called wake on ring. Believe it or not some motherboards come with both capabilities. Your computer might be set up to boot when you get a phone call. I know it sounds strange but the first thing i'd do is check the bios settings for wake on ring to see if you have that (which i think you do). Also if there are jumper settings on your motherboard for wake on ring i'd disable it. Also check the manual (RTFM!) i hope this helps you.
