PCI slot does not recongize NIC

By fernando.rubiano ·
I am installing a new NIC into an open PCI slot, the system boots up, but the operating system does not load. I only get a blinking cursor on the left top hand corner of the screen. I tried to move the NIC to different PCI slots and still same problem. I remove the NIC and system boots up normally. The POST only has one short beep, the BIOS version is displayed. (Ver 1.0)
FYI- I'm running windows 2000 Pro. I'm currently using 4 out of the 6 PCI slots. I also tried moving them around but with no luck. I checked the paper work for both the cards and motherboard and there is nothing in regards to setting a jumper. My motherboard is an AOPEN AX4B-533. I checked with their site, and they have nothing in regards to this problem.
NOTE- I've tried 4 different types of cards (2-3Com cards, 1-Compaq card, and 1-Netgear card).

The purpose of installing the NIC is to hook up my Cable modem.

Thank you.

A couple of possibilities:

You may have an IRQ conflict.

With that motherboard, it's possible to manually set the IRQs through the BIOS.

You also may have to disable the built-in network controller. (A Realtek RTL8100BL network controller is included as an integrated feature.) In fact, disable (in the BIOS) any of the LAN features (network controller, Wake on LAN, etc.)

typical IRQ problem or interupt request.
Why moving around the nic card didn't work is because any time you put it in a slot (if it's plug n play) the pnp resource manager sees it as installing a new card always be ready with drivers when you do this.
Go into your bios in Advance settings in PCI configuration see if pci prioty is on.
Get the latest drivers for your card.
if that doen't work.
upgrade your bios or check www.motherboards.org
and for drivers www.drivershq.com username drivers password all

It was not a IRQ conflict, in fact it was the BIOS version, it had a problem where it only recognized 4 PCI slots, not 6. As soon as I upgraded the BIOS, it automatically picked up my NIC. Thanks anyway.
