Good response - the files were created in Acrobat and can be viewed/editied both in this application and Illustrator. However, the files are drawings which need to be inserted into Autocad for inclusion in a larger project.

CAD files are intentionaly converted to PDF files (by the Adobe program) so that the designer or drawer can retain his proprietary rights of the CAD files. The PDF files can be viewed or printed by the buyer, BUT THEY CAN'T BE EDITED. In order to edit the drawing you need the original CAD files.

Thank you - already realised that the drawings had been been converted to pdf. Problem is we do not have access to original CAD drawings and whilst we can (as you rightly say) view and print from Acrobat, we are unable to edit which is the important part. From what you state in your answer, this now looks unlikely. Thanks again.
