Pentium11 and WinXP

By zaria ·
I am trying to set up an old P11 system, 128 ram, 233MHz, with XP Pro. The m/b is AL440LX, Phoenix bios ver 4.06 rev 3.09, Intel 440 family chipset. All is running fine except that comm ports (1,2) and printer port have exclamation mark in device manager (code 29-been to microsofts site to find code-not a lot of help) and the modem is not seen at all (pctel 56k micromodem, seen perfectly ok in another system with winxp). The question is what am I doing wrong-everything seems wired up ok, but I am fairly new to this so may have missed something obvious. Any suggestions would be welcome thanks

try update to bios...

by mrjay67 In reply to Pentium11 and WinXP

If you havent alreay You may want to Flash(i.e. reload) or update your bios. If there is not an actual update than flashing might help if it has been corrupted. On older systems like that there may be a jumper on the board that allows you to resetthe BIOS. TRY THAT FIRST before flashing. If you never have flashed a BIOS make sure to read the directions from the MotherBoard or BIOS mfr.
You can also try the following links from Intel:

The FTP is the actual file that may help. It's Intels Chipset Software Installation Utility that is supposed to help with hardware not loading correctly in Device Manager. I would try reseting BIOS and installing Intels utility before trying to Flash the BIOS. The Following appears to be the BIOS UPDATE link with a link there for directions:

Rem to remove any spaces that may appear in the links as you paste them.
Rem to use caution in doing the BIOS update. IF anything goes wrong in the middle of an update that can be it for your system. Try the other options FIRST.

Hope this helps

You are hunting elephants with a BB gun, WHY? Read the hareware Req. for XP and quit tilting at windmills.
