Poor Write Performance on Sun v20z, v40z and x4200 Series Servers

By itsp1965 ·
Folks, I have been posting this in different forums and have not received much of a response. We are currently running a bunch of SunFire AMD servers running Windows 2003 Enterprise and SQL Server 2005. We are having a problem whereby our DBA has indicated is due to poor write performance.
I have noticed on most of these servers, they have installed their databases on the local disk which is a Raid-1 mirror on an LSI 1064 SAS controller.
I have read an article indicating that these built-in LSI logic controllers do not have write-back caching installed by default because there is no battery backup on these controllers and that Sun recommends only using this local disk for the OS.
Has anyone have had any experience with these servers and any documentation indicating the limitations of the disk controller. I need to go back to our customer and indicate to them of this limitation. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Regards

Terry
