Download and run AdAware from Lavasoft. This is a free program that will scan your registry and files for known spyware applications. My guess is that one is running on your computer, and that's the simplest way to remove it.

Concur with what first respondant says.
Also If it is a windows2k or XP machine click start > settings > COntrol Panel > Administrative Tools > Serices.
Stop the service for Messenger.
Please note this is not the MSN Messenger service so if you use MSN you will still be able to use it. It simply stops annpoying Wiundwos Messenger opp adds.

The "BEST" way that I have found to avoid pop-ups is to switch to the Mozilla web browser.

www.mozilla.org

Their built-in pop-up blocker is more effective than any of the 3rd party packages.

In addition to running Ad Aware (hopefully with the current updates), download and run SpyBot's Search and Destroy. These programs work very well together and tend to catch different things. If you have XP with more than one profile, you will need to run both in each profile while disconected from the internet in order to try to get it cleaned up. Additionally, run them both logged in as Administrator in safe mode. Some of the new spyware is very hard to remove. After you have run the spyware checkers, check the exclusions lists on both and make sure nothing is checked. Good luck

On top of all of the ggod advice here, try hitting Alt+F4 to see if it will close the ad so you don't have to go through the trouble of shutting down your system.
