Portal/Website Replication

By idgbabs ·
Please I shall like to how to replicate the content of an entire portal or website? Is it possible to replicate a portal on another server?

This is to ensure that when there is a problem with one you can always have access to the other.

Please help me as I desperately need to replicate an entire portal on another web server.

One way

Assuming that your servers are identical, you can just download the contents of the document root directory to your PC and then upload the directory to the other server.

Tools like an FTP client application or Secure Copy client like WinSCP with a GUI can be used for this purpose. It is also important to make sure that the settings of the server are backed up and the folder permissions are documented.

In Apache terms or more widely, LAMP terms, this means backing up at least the files /etc/httpd/httpd.conf, /etc/my.cnf and /etc/php.ini. If your server runs a MySQL database, you need to dump it regularly, or set up your server to replicate the database to the backup server. There may be other files you want to copy across, and really the best thing is to test your disaster recovery procedures regularly.

Also there must be systems that automatically update the whole server to another box, kind of 'hot standby' arrangement, but you can do a lot by documenting your server setup and maintaining backups and regular copies of the dynamic data.

I do it with ZipDeploy and phpMyAdmin

I dump the database using phpMyAdmin (as Zip) and the files with ZipDeploy using the "backup and download" feature. Then I upload the files and unzip on server always with ZipDeploy, and create / copy the database using phpMyAdmin.

I mean I do it for joomla, oscommerce, phpbb sites...
