What should you be knowing, eh? ...

Well, first of all you should have amassed around 10 to 15 years experience working in the field. To be any kind of IT Consultant it is only fair that you have already experienced first hand, the majority of the problems that your Clients are likely to come to you with.

You'll never realistically make a go of it, if you assume others problems can be solved purely from what you've read in a textbook somewhere. If that were the case, the user with the problem wouldn't need an IT Consultant - they'd just look up the problem in the textbook you yourself are using, thereby saving the consultancy fee.

Far better to have got your hands dirty first before appointing yourself as a consultant - which I notice you already have.
