Prevent Downloads

By itadmin ·
How can I prevent users from downloading anything from the internet?
I have 2 win2k servers and 30 users behind a BEFSX41 Lynksys router on a T1 line.

The quickest way to get about 90 % of your users is to disable file downloads via Internet Explorer. If you run a logon script this is very easy. Just change the following registry settings...

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3

Key Value Description
1004 3 Download Unsigned ActiveX Controls
1604 3 Font Download
1800 3 Installation of Desktop Items
1803 3 File Download
1804 3 Launching programs in an IFRAME
1805 3 Launching programs in webview
1806 3 Launching apps and unsafe files
1E05 3 Software channel permissions
2004 3 Run .NET components not signed with Authenticode

If you have active directory setup, which I assume you do. You can disable download feature through Group Policy. Then disable access to the Internet Options from the Tools menu so that they cannot change it back.

I would suggest doing this over editing registry. Because editing registry is dangerous and this way you can always refer back to GP to find out who this policy applies to and who it doesn ot.
