Look at Start-> Settings-> Printers. Is your printer shown there? If yes, right-click on it. Is it set as the default printer?

Steve from what I can remember from my old DOS days, the drivers were written especially and are not interchangeable. In this case you may have a driver that is only for DOS. Check the printer properties and re-install the drivers for your printer. Make sure if you have the driver disc that you use the Setup.exe not the Install.exe this is the DOS only driver.
The last time this happened to me was with an old Epson SQ Dot Matrix. Like an idiot I forgot and installed the DOS drive instead.
Once you have the Windows driver installed make sure the Printer is set to default. This again can be set in the Printer Properties Window. The quickest way to it is via Your Computer Icon on desktop.Hope this helps, let me know if it doesn’t and the Printer type and I can check it from my end. It help when I have availability to over 400 different printers.
Cheers Strider.

The printer is Epson Stylus 660.
This is a new printer – I checked on the CD and there only seems to be windows drivers, no DOS drivers

You probably don’t have the driver for your printer in Windows 98. Have your Windows 98 CD ready. Click Start/Settings/ Printers. Click Add Printer. Choose the manufacturer of your printer from the left pane and choose the printer model from the right pane. Click Next. Insert your Windows 98 in the CD-ROM drive. Make sure that the drive assignment is correct (ex. D:\WIN98) and click OK. Follow the rest of the prompt and make sure that you assigned your printer as the default.

The drivers needed for the Epson Stylus 660 are EPXLPT.VXD and VMM32.VXD which are installed using this method. I’ve checked the drivers on the first machine I had the printer working successfully on and the drivers match each other on both computers.

Most likly a printer driver issue. Download the lastest driver for your printer. Check http://www.windrivers.com Then go to START =>SETTINGS=>PRINTER=>add printer when you get to the driver page click HAVE DISK and also make it your default windows printer

DOS has its own printer drivers, therefore you have not installed your printer drivers for Windows.
Use the cd you got with the printer or the Windows CD and use “Start”/”Settings”/”Printers” and add new printer.
Then point the system to whicheverCD you are using.
