I always go through the same steps when troubleshooting printers in order to isolate the problem. I would suggest that it is probably the printer itself though, but just incase...

1.PRINTER - Every HP printer allows you to print a test/config page from the printer itself
2.DRIVER - Delete the printer driver and download and install the latest driver from the HP site (print Windows test page)
3.CABLE - Replace Printer cable and/or test existing cable on alternate printer/PC (test again)

The fact that it will work from a 'cold start' points to the imaging unit overheating. There are a number of reasons for this to happen including old age but you may want to pull the printer apart and clean out any dust and toner that has accumulated in the printer (worst thing for them)

Imaging units are not economical to fix and you generally need to have them replaced. With HPs it tends to be more economical to buy a new printer although your local 'printer repair man' may have spare/recycled printer parts for your particular model.

Good luck!
