Printer switch box not working with HP L

By cariboss ·
I purchased an automatic sensing printer switch box which allows 2 computers to share a printer. It worked fine The same customer asked me to do the same thing with a HP LaserJet 6P this time around. It just would not print. The error was :Cannot find printer, check cable.
I also tried changing to LPT1 port from SPP to EPC+EPP in the BIOS,changing to unidirectional printing, changing all three cables and changing the auto printer switch box with a known good one.
Is there anyone out there who can help

The HP 6P software driver is a bi-directional driver. That means the computer talks to the printer and the printer talks back. the switch box is not allowing the computer to hear the messages the printer sends back,

You can turn off the Bi-Directional communication in the HP driver.

What I normally do is use the standard Windows HP III or IV driver.
They are not bi-directional.

HP has said that you can not use a switch box with this model of laser printer, because of the bi-direction communication, You can try disabling bi-direction communication in printers property, and also set up lpt port to spp.

In my experience, a lot of the newer printers WILL have issue with switchboxes (as well as non IEEE1284 cables).

Both cases (either a switchbox or an older non IEEE1284 Bi Directional cable) can cause problems with newer printers.

Try using a "junk pc" (486 , whatever) and use it as a small print server if nothing else works.

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago although not with an HP6P. Basically after hours of pushing, pulling and changing stuff around, I discovered that the cables were too long. Try using shorter cables.
