Printing Problems

My guess would be that the ribbon is not installed correctly. We have a dot-matrix printer, and we have to change the ribbon so infrequently, that we always have to fumble around trying to remember how it goes.

I think we could use a little more information...

Is the print too light?
Is the print in characters that don't make sense?
Is the print too small?
Something else?

for example if I print the ABC's it may look like this '_???wC??'_???wC?'_???wC????q??. It doesn't matter if I am printing words or CLIP ART it prints the same way. The print is dark enough. I just can't read it,I have Win XP Professional. Thanks for any and all help.

I think that your problem is the driver for this printer.
Also you can try to change the cable from PC to printer or try different settings in BIOS for paralel port.

First, make sure the cable is connected securely at each end. I know this sound overly simple, but I have fixed many a problem like this by a cable end being askew.

Next, try a different (known good) cable.

Third, print out the internal printer settings (the printer's configuration page - from the printers control panel, NOT XP's). Now delete the existing printer icon, and re-create the printer - being careful to use the same emulation mode listed on the printer configuration page.

Note - the printer manual will tell you how to get the "configuration page."

If neither of these approaches work you either have a bad PC port (unlikely), or a bad printer (possible).
