Printing when on VPN...not what you think...

By UNBLVR ·
When on the VPN, printing to my HP 3600 is extremely slow. Here's a quick summary:

Original setup...
Linksys wireless router with 4 port switch
Laptop 1 (work)...use Cisco VPN to connect to company network
Laptop 2 (personal)
Lexmark x9350 wireless printer (set up as wireless)

Printing from either laptop never a problem, whether on VPN or not.

Current setup...
Linksys wireless router with 4 port switch
Laptop 1 (work)...use Cisco VPN to connect to company network
Laptop 2 (personal)
Lexmark x9350 wireless printer (set up as wireless)
HP 3600 color laser printer (wired to port on router)

Printing to HP or Lexmark is normal. Log onto VPN with laptop 1, printing to Lexmark is still normal, printing to HP takes a long time.

If I disconnect from the VPN, laptop 1 cannot print to HP, but to Lexmark is still normal. I have to reboot in order to print to the HP again.

At all times, printing with laptop 2 is normal.

While troubleshooting, I observed the "statistics" for the VPN client. Printing to the HP sends an enormous amount of data out and back...printing to Lexmark sends none. The problem is so bad, even adjusting columns in Excel, or using page setup is painfully slow and generates a similar amount of traffic.

I've also tried connecting the Lexmark to one of the router ports in an attempt to replicate the issue...it works the same as though configured wirelessly.

I've also tried setting router up with an IP that doesn't transverse the VPN and manually adding a route...same behavior.

Today I may purchase a wireless print server and connect the HP with it, but at this point I'm not very optimistic of the result.

Any suggestions?

Joe
