prints from network program not comming

By anilkumar ·
A Dot matrix printer tvse msp 355xl is connected on lpt1. A dos based network software can't initialize the printer until we give a print command from dos prompt in windows 98. The same printer is shared and working fine for network users using the same dos based network software. What may be the reason please tell me.

Try adding the printer again using the ADD PRINTER wizard and when it gets to the box where it asks if you want to print from DOS applications click on YES and continue with setup. You don't mention the DOS network system being used but if the printer is truly a networked printer not directly connected to your computer then having it connect to LPT1 is probably not a good idea.

I'm not sure if your problem is with the PC that's connected directly to the printer on LPT1 or if its the setting on the PCs connecting over the network. If its the later, unless disabled or changed in the BIOS, LPT1 is the physical parallel connector in the PC so it cant be used as a captured port. There's a couple of ways to take care of this. After making the changes on the workstations make sure (as may be needed) that the LPT port matches in the DOS software setup.

1. Installing the printer from scratch.

Open the Network Neighborhood and go to the PC that has the shared device. If its not there, then there's other issues to get past first. Assuming the printer is correctly shared, right click on it and select "Capture Printer Port". If its the same OS the drivers will be loaded automatically. Select LPT2 instead of 1.

2. To correct the current settings.

Go to the printers folder and right click on the printer in question. Choose properties, then select details from the tabs across the top of the popup. There's a add port button next to where it says "print to the following port". Use add printer then select network and choose browse if the printer is correctly shared it will appear in the list. You may need to expand the list by using the plus signs until all shared printers are shown. Next put the printer on LPT2 and apply the changes.

If the printer is physically connected to the PC then use the same directions as specified in item 2 but capture tothe local port.

Memory problem with windows.?.. check the memory with Win 98... this happened to me few years back. I cleared my PC from programs & applications I was not using, and had more memory for printing... also the printer could be having too much data coming and frezing; and standing still. I hope this help.
