problem booting Win98 after instralling

By domain ·
My problem started on Sunday 1/2/00. I installed Tweakui but I think I installed the wrong file, now I boot the PC & it does the regular stuff @ boot time but when it's time to load windows interface it locks on me, I don't get anything but a color screen the color screen is part of the win98 interface. The task manager is there but with programs that I have installed 6 months ago, no systray, no Rnaapp ( nothing.)
I think that I have a REGISTRY problem. The file I installed was TWEAKUI,cpl or the TWEAKUI.cnt I am not sure of the file I installed, but I can't get none of my Icons, Taskbar, nothing just a color screen with the mouse, no Win98.

Boot into "Safe Mode" and uninstall the TweakUI file you installed.

I know of 3 things you can try. Boot to safe mode and try to uninstall TweakUI, or boot to command prompt and use the scanreg utility. scanreg /? will give you the switches that are available. Third is to re-install WIN98 over top itself. It will keep your current info, and may replace whatever happened to get corrupted or garbled.
Hope this helps.

Uninstalling TweakUI will probably not help, as the file(s) that is/are corrupted will probably not be restored correctly. Reinstalling Win98 over top of itself (as stated in #2) is the first thing to try, then Uninstall - any registry editing should always be a 'last resort' choice.

All the answers above are on the right track, this will make things a whole lot easier.

1.) TWEAKUI has all ready corrupted the registry so uninstalling will not help, when you unistall tweakui the registry entries will not be deleted.

2.) Youshould either boot from a floppy or the windows 98 cd, open the directory /win98/tools/sysrec on the windows 98 cd and run the program called pcrestor.bat. This will bring your system back to its original state with out loosing your desktop settingsexcept your wallpaper will default to windows first boot. You should then be able to boot in Window 98 with no problem.

3.) After Windows is restored, unistall TWEAKUI from | START | CONTROL PANEL | ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS |, then go to windows explorer |START| PROGRAMS | WINDOWS EXPLORER | delete all traces of the TWEAKUI folder, close explorer, run "regedit" from the | START |RUN|, check in the user hive and local machine hive for any entries from TWEAKUI. Delete them and reboot, you should beback to normal after
