Problem with Win 95 after changing adapt

By castillo.andy ·
I changed the adapter type in the display properties and now I can't get into windows. I can get into safe mode, but even after I change the adapter back to it's original type, Win 95 still will not come up.

Assuming what you changed it to will work with your adapter...Check in the device manager and make sure you don't have two display type configured in there. You want to remove the one that is not showing the display properties.

You may have toreset what's left in there back to a Standard PCI graphics adapter or a standard VGA adapter and then change it to whatever your were using.

If it still does not come up, edit the syste.ini file and look for a line that says
display= <some driver> and change it to display=vga.drv. My system says display=pnpdrvr.drv, but it could read a number of different thinigs. The line should be right near the top of the system.ini

Ok!
Go into 95 in safe mode, go to the system folder on Control Panel, look for the icon for display adapter and delete the driver with in.
Go to the properties of the display and change the display adapter to the gerenric one 16 colors. Reboot, now you get in but colors sucks.
Get the driver for your adapter (CD, diskette or download the latest for the mfr's web site)re-install it using the diskette or CD and you should be OK.

Good luck!

Hi,

You don?t say what exactly, but it exhibits
the symptoms of an ATI Rage Pro. If so:

Boot to safe mode, got to Add/Remove Software & remove the Display Driver Software.

Boot to safe mode again, change the adapter to "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" and reboot
to enhanced mode (normal).

Remove the C:\ATI Directory & Reboot.

Re-Install Your MB Chipset AGP & GFX Card drivers.

Adapt as necessary!

CU,
Glenn

Right-click My Computer, select Properties, select the Devices tab. Double-click Display Adapters and delete everything under it. When you reboot, it will redetect your adapter and reload the the drivers from the INF file.

Upgrade to win98 as its a bit better with plug and play and has more recent graphics card drivers and support for AGP. it may be to do with your vgard driver (motherboard agp) which needs to be installed seperately. boot to safe mode, right click onmy computer, properties, device manger, remove the display adapter and reboot. It should detect and allow the new drivers to be installed again, choose have disk and point to your driver disk.
