Question on Windows 98 defrag on an HP..

By New Graduate ·
Hello All,

I'm new to technical support and I had a question that hopefully some of you more senior support gurus can help me with. I'm simply trying to defrag a hard drive on an HP Pavilion on a Win 98 platform. However, when I try to use the defrag utility, I keep getting a "System has changed, starting over" message after the defrag is about 5% complete. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Have a productive day.

Check running programs

I would check for running programs or processes that could be accessing the hard drive. Check for virus software that could be constantly checking changes to the hard drive. Each time something accesses the hard drive the defrag utility is likely to start over. If necessary use ctrl-alt-del to bring up the task list and end each task (except explorer and systray) and then try defrag again.

Win98 and defrag

Boot your system into DOS and run scandisk from there. Then boot into Windows and attempt Defrag again. Make sure you have nothing else running while trying this.

Windows 98 Defrag

This messages indicates there is a process running that is changing the system.
This is usually Task Scheduler, or another program in the tray that is running in the background.

To stop this message showing simply close all your running applications - including Task Scheduler, eMail client, etc and run defrag.

Hope this helps.
