Re-install XP over XP

by f_r_elson In reply to reinstall XP over XP with ...

you can use the repair facility within XP which will retain your settings, apps etc.

Boot from the CD-ROM and follow instructions as if you were going to re-install XP from scratch. Ignore the prompt to repair using Recovery Console option. Eventually you will get a screen showing the current installation of windows and a prompt to press R to repair the current installation.

Windows will then re-enumerate devices etc and looks as if it is re-installing but it isn't. You will be required to re-enter the CD-Key and if hardware has changed significantly, you will be required to re-activate your copy with Microsoft.

Hope this helps.
