replace 2000 DC with 2003 DC

By ryerex ·
We have 2 DC's running Win2000 Server. One is the "primary" DC. We are replacing the "secondary" DC with a new server running Win2003 Server. As I understand things so far, I will have to run adprep /forestprep & adprep /domainprep on the primary DC first.

Questions...
Do I demote the old secondary DC first before running adprep?

Once i demote the old secondary and remove it from the domain and then hook up the new unit that will become the secondary and promote it to be a DC, how do I get Active Directory set up on it?

New DCs

First, I suggest you run ADPREP on the existing primary server. Leave that overnight to ensure its ok.

Next, demote the second DC to a member server and remove it from the domain.
Install the new server then run dcpromo to add it to the domain. It will then replicate the domain info automatically, it make take a few hours before everything is replicated.

Exchange 2000

Another question... we also have a 3rd system running Win2000 server and Exchange 2000. Are there any steps I need to perform on that server. It is not a DC. I have been reading various articles but at this stage, it's a bit confusing.

You do not need to do anything to other servers.
