Replace Ad with new server

by mohdredhahamzah . Updated 17 years, 3 months ago

Hi All,
scenario;
A- Old Server
B- New Server

Currently i’ve single AD, running with exchange service.
few weeks back, our exchange server got problem.the mailbox database was is dirty shutdown state.
after 2days process of recovering fails, we decide to create a new exchange database to ensure service availability. and while that, i managed to recover the database mailbox.
i’ve follow one exchange recovery method which is :
1- install new server with 2003 and exchange with the latest update.same ip,same server name, same domain.all the same..
2- promote AD same as Old Server and set up exchange same like exchange server.
3-create a user. and perform soft hard recovery… and it works.finally..not like before.
4-and all old mailbox are in the new server.now they have 2 mailbox.but i’ll try to use exmerge command to merge the mailbox.but that can be done..
p/s: all in isolate environment.(different network)
end.

now the case is.my boss has asked me to replace the old server with the new server i’ve created.
even it has same domain name, same server name, same ip.
is it possible for me to just plug off the old server an replace the new server. sure it won’t work! isnt?

i was thinking
1- setup the server again with new server name.
2- promote the server to current AD and transfer all FSMO roles

is it possible this way..or else can i make this easier by plug off old AD and replace with new AD.are there any similar step that can follows that will make my life easier.

but one more thing is, i was confused about the exchange service.how im gonna maintain the current mail header and so on. to ensure that all user will never get interrupt once i replace the old server with the new one.

the last i hope, i can get a big picture on how this can be done in step by step.maybe just for a guidance?
any advise is really appreciate.
tq.
