What steps should I take before replacing battery? Backup registry? Backup configuration?
Anything else of major importance?

Backing up the registry and the cmos is always the safest thing to do. You do not need to back up the registry to replace the battery. It is stored on the hard drive and is non volatile. What year is this machine? The Cmos may automatically set itself up except for the time date. This is a usual feature in newer machines.

if really really old machine, write down hard drive 'cyl heads sectors lz' numbers. otherwise, just go for it. the defaults will be fine, if your battery went bad you are probably running using the defaults now anyway...

Make sure you know its potential dangers of changing your CMOS.

1.Write down all system settings. Very very important. Make sure you write it down.

2. Ensure that the battery will be accessible and that it can be removed.

3. Obtain batteryinformation for example wiring, chemistry, voltage and packaging.

4.When replacing you make sure you are completely aware of ESD and its potential dangers.

5.Once the battery is replaced enter all values back into CMOS. If you were unable towrite down these settings before replacing the CMOS battery you may need to contact your computer manufacturer for values.

You can also go the following website for more information and for a small utility u can use called CMOS RAM which backupsand restores your CMOS. I've used it before and I think its a great small utility. Scroll down to the middle of the page.

All comments are greatly appreciated. I was able to screen-print all cmos pages. Hope I don't need the info but I feel more confident now. You people are great!
